Kenya’s Legal and Administrative Evolution
Mapping the Foundations of Kenya’s Legal System
At KIT LLP, we believe that understanding Kenya’s legal history is essential to shaping its future. The country’s legal system is rooted in a complex history of governance, stretching back to the colonial period when administrative boundaries defined governance, access to justice, and the organization of communities.
The map shown here, titled “Kenya, Administrative Boundaries as at 1918”, was sourced from:
Great Britain, Foreign & Commonwealth Office. Kenya: Report of the Northern Frontier District Commission (London: HMSO, 1962).
This historical map illustrates the administrative divisions established during the British colonial era, such as the Northern Frontier Province, Jubaland Province, Ukamba Province, and others. These divisions were more than geographic they laid the framework for governance, regulation, and law enforcement in the early 20th century.
While Kenya has since undergone significant constitutional and administrative reforms—including independence in 1963, the creation of provinces, and later devolution into 47 counties under the 2010 Constitution—the legacy of these early structures continues to influence the legal and political landscape.
At KIT LLP, we are guided by this history as we help shape Kenya’s legal present and future. By acknowledging how law and governance evolved from colonial administrative boundaries to today’s devolved system, we strengthen our commitment to offering legal services that are not only current but also rooted in Kenya’s unique historical journey.
